Summary

Shiori, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret。 Forbidden magic runs through her veins。 Normally she conceals it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control。 At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted, but it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother。

Raikama has dark magic of her own, and she banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes, and warning Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die。

Peniless, voiceless, and alone, Shiori searches for her brothers, and, on her journey, uncovers a conspiracy to overtake the throne—a conspiracy more twisted and deceitful, more cunning and complex, than even Raikama's betrayal。 Only Shiori can set the kingdom to rights, but to do so she must place her trust in the very boy she fought so hard not to marry。 And she must embrace the magic she's been taught all her life to contain—no matter what it costs her。

I was really excited about this book。 An Asian inspired fairy tale retelling of The Six Swans? And I hardly need to add that the cover is gorgeous!I was hoping for an atmospheric historical-fantasy blend like The Ghost Bride。 Alas。 The language was modern, the setting was unidentifiable, and the plot development was slow。I like Shiori and Takkan: there is definitely some chemistry between them。 I wish they had been given more time to get to know each other in the book, especially because of the I was really excited about this book。 An Asian inspired fairy tale retelling of The Six Swans? In the original fairy tale, the princess had to weave nettles into shirts for her brothers to break the spell but if she ever spoke, the spell would become permanent and they would remain swans forever。 The spell that Raikama cast was definitely overkill。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

STUNNING。 I know I received this as an ARC, but I feel like buying it anyway, just so I can admire that cover。Another stunning aspect of this book was the way the villains were depicted, and I can’t go much into this without spoiling, but there were some really touching twists that added to the unique-ness of Six Crimson Cranes。 I didn’t love the love-interest or Shiori’s relationship with him as much as I loved her relationship with her brothers, but he was still really sweet and kind, and it’s always nice to see more non-toxic YA men。 I think he was definitely a good match to strong-headed and determined Shiori, and I can’t wait to see their relationship further develop in the next book!“If fate is a bunch of strings, then I’ll carry scissors… My choices are my own。 I’ll make them as I please。”(Shiori talking about fate。This quote may not be in the published version of this novel, it was copied from the advanced reader’s copy。)All in all, I’m desperate to read the next book in this series, and I’m so glad I was able to snatch an ARC of Six Crimson Cranes! A gorgeous retelling of a rarely-mentioned fairytale。 Thank you so much to the author, publisher and TBR & Beyond Tours for the ARC copy! 。。。more

I adored the spin the dawn duology so of course I was anticipating this book and series so much。 But nothing prepared me for finishing it in 3h, I completely fell in love with the characters and the story。 I felt physical pain when our protagonist felt pain, it was incredible。 And it for sure took the top ten in my favorite books of the year and for life。 Please please read this book, Elizabeth Lim is now and forever in my heart。

I feel like it would be a disservice to the love interest in this story and wouldn't make sense。 But it just seems like there's a little bit there with the other character and I cannot ignore it (and I always lose when I pick a love interest so I am gonna keep my mind open - both characters are really great in different ways and I cannot wait to see Shiori spend more time with the other one!) 。。。more

Elizabeth Lim’s writing is so immersive and atmospheric。 I really liked her Blood of Stars series, and this is a great addition the lore of that world。 The story is based off the fairytale The Wild Swans, with some Chinese and Japanese folklore woven in as well。 It certainly does have the feel of a classic fairytale, but also has some twists and surprises that I found very rewarding。 The middle of the book felt very slow to me, but I think the slow burn of the pacing paid off in the climax。 I wa Elizabeth Lim’s writing is so immersive and atmospheric。 I really liked her Blood of Stars series, and this is a great addition the lore of that world。 The story is based off the fairytale The Wild Swans, with some Chinese and Japanese folklore woven in as well。 It certainly does have the feel of a classic fairytale, but also has some twists and surprises that I found very rewarding。 The middle of the book felt very slow to me, but I think the slow burn of the pacing paid off in the climax。 I was also disappointed that there weren’t more dragons in the story。 The blurb promises the help of a dragon, but he doesn’t actually help that much in this story。 The way the sequel is being set up, however, leads me to believe dragons will play a larger role as the series continues。 I know I will be eagerly awaiting for it。 。。。more

I loved the romance in this one。 It is sweet, and it really takes its time to build。 There are lots of spoilers, and an amazing twist at the end, but I cannot recommend this one enough! I loved Seryu too, his introduction was so cute but sadly he wasn't very present in the book。 It was one of those characters that are introduced and appear a few times, but after that ending, I think he'll be playing a much bigger role in book 2! Plot: I didn't think YA fantasy could give me something new and original, but wow did the plot deliver! The magic system, the dynamics of the curse? It was so much fun to read about。 The lore and stories played such a central role to the plot, and overall I can't praise it enough。 The plot twists had me screeching and gasping, honestly they were so unexpected! Thank you Random House & NetGalley for an eARC of this book!Four stars from me 😌 Six Crimson Cranes is such a wonderfully woven tale of Japanese and Chinese folklore。 Shiori’s adventures were told in such an enchanting way and I loved it immensely! The characters were so rich with personality but not without their flaws ~ Shiori herself was at times so frustrating (some of her decisions made me want to yell!!) but her growth over the course of the story really was one of my favorite parts。Most of the conflicts felt like they were resolved pretty predictably, and a lot of the plot itself was skimmed over ~ certain aspects of Shiori’s adventure that took days (eg her sailing the sea alone for a week being summed up in a couple sentences) were so brief and didn’t have super rich descriptions。 At first this felt kind of weak to me but eventually I fell into the rhythm of that kind of writing and realized that it did feel really reminiscent of reading a childhood fairytale because of that。 My only major qualm was that the conflicts didn’t feel very high stakes because of the writing style + how things were resolved super quickly and without any sort of lasting tension。Overall, I loved Shiori, loved Takkan, and I really enjoyed the experience of reading this story! There were so many really stunning moments and I just loved the author’s combination of a Hans Christian Andersen reimagining + Japanese/Chinese folklore ~ it was so unique, and I’m looking forward to the sequel! 。。。more

I've been wanting to get my hands on an Elizabeth Lim book for a long time, and I am so happy I finally did。 This book is a beautiful concoction of fairytale-feels, hidden royalty, dragons, and sibling relationships that are radiantly heartwarming。 While the pacing at the beginning felt a little rushed (especially with how Shiori came to learn how to control her magic) the rest of the story wholly made up for it。Shiori, the narrator, added the perfect amount of zest to the storyline。 I often have a difficult time reading from the perspectives of spitfire protagonists because they tend to make utterly stupid decisions, but Shiori was a pleasant surprise—and a relief—of a character。 Her relationship with her six brothers was so wholesome, which was refreshing to see in a YA book。 I won't go too in-depth on the romance for spoiler purposes, but it is hands-down adorable。 I've read so many stories recently saturated with spice, I didn't realize how much I needed a cute, honest, and unproblematic romance。 (From the bottom of my shriveled heart, thank you, Elizabeth Lim。)That said, I loved the world-building。 It was simple but rich in culture and colorful in setting。 Shiori is a food-lover like me, and I admittedly found my mouth watering at some of the descriptions of what she ate。 But more than that, the legends weaved in made Six Crimson Cranes so enjoyable。 The plot itself followed a very basic quest arc that is so often seen in YA, but the new takes and myths incorporated kept me reading。 (That, and Shiori's tenacity, Kiki's attitude, Seryu's quips, and Takkan's cinnamon-roll personality。)The reason this book is 4 stars instead of 5 is that, as I mentioned, the beginning felt a little rushed。 Even so, I wouldn't have wanted the story to linger any longer than it did on the events before the inciting plot incident, which I think Lim was working toward。 (Thus, a conundrum。) Honestly, I don't quite know how this could have been solved, and the excitement and relentless pacing of the rest of the story made me forget about that dilemma。My only regret is that I won't get the next book for like another whole year。 (If only I were a dragon, a year would only feel like a few weeks。😉) 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me an e-book arc of this book! I am so glad to have had the chance to review such a beautiful piece of art。 Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim is truly a masterpiece。 We follow Princess Shiroi'anma and her six brothers as they quest to relieve themselves of their stepmother's curse。 Though Shirori made a mute, and her brothers made cranes, their mission proves itself as quite difficult。 Shiori learns throughout the book how to control the magic of her own, for Thank you to NetGalley for giving me an e-book arc of this book! I am so glad to have had the chance to review such a beautiful piece of art。 Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim is truly a masterpiece。 We follow Princess Shiroi'anma and her six brothers as they quest to relieve themselves of their stepmother's curse。 Though Shirori made a mute, and her brothers made cranes, their mission proves itself as quite difficult。 Shiori learns throughout the book how to control the magic of her own, for it is far more powerful than she initially thought。 The plot that this book follows is so unique! Elizabeth Lim did an amazing job at keeping me hooked, even with the lack of dialogue-I rely on dialogue a lot to keep me hooked。 In this book, there is an arranged marriage, but one of the characters doesn't want to be married。 As a result, they flee on their wedding day。 Later on, the two meet again but under different circumstances。 Over time, they begin to enjoy each other's presence and eventually fall in love。 This book was so gripping! I found myself struggling to find a good place to put it down。 There were so many action-packed scenes and exciting events that I just wanted to sit down and read it all at once! The book flowed nicely, and I understood the world pretty well by the end。 The author built the setting and magic in a way that the reader could read without getting bored but also understand the laws! If you like exciting plot twists, then read this book! The ending rounded out so well。 All of these characters have my heart, especially Shiroir and Seryu。 I loved the way Shiori and Seryu met, it truly brings out both of their true characters。 Whenever Seryu had an interaction with Shiori, I was even more interested than before。 The aspect of dragons was also something I really enjoyed。 All of the characters were built in such a complex manner, especially Raikama。 The way her character grew was very impressive, and a character with such depth was interesting to read about。 If you are looking for a fantasy with a good amount of romance, I wouldn't recommend this book。 Up until the last 75 pages or so, there were light bits of romance。 However, nothing much。 This book revolves more around family themes, something I happened to enjoy much more! It really does make up for the lack of romance, but I'm sure the sequel will include more interaction between Shiori and Takkan。 The writing in the book is so beautiful。 It makes you feel as though you yourself are in this fairytale。 The settings are developed just as well as the characters are。 This made it very easy to imagine the scenes and to lose myself to this fantasy world。 This is one of my favorite reads of the year, I will probably never stop recommending it! Overall, it was a beautiful book! Plot- 5/5Pacing- 5/5 Characters- 5/5 Writing Style- 5/5 Enjoyment- 5/5 Final Rating- 5/5 。。。more

Because apparently this isn’t a standalone! It’s the first in a duology, with an open ending。 Some things are resolved but I still have so many questions。 The thread of fate weaves itself through the whole novel, literally at times。 There are certain things that seem destined to happen, things Shiori can’t do anything to change。 Like her betrothal; no matter how hard she tries to avoid it, even with a curse put on her so no one knows who she is, Shiori can’t avoid Takkan, nor can she avoid developing feelings for him, or vice versa。 She fights against it, wanting to make her own choices and her own path。 Along with the thread of fate, there are other fantastical and fairytale elements that just keep popping up, maintaining the vibes of a fairytale, even as the story expanded beyond those parameters of a fairytale。 I loved the physical descriptions; even though they were just describing the basic surroundings, it felt so magical。 Mountains and forests and snow and ice。 So beautiful。 And the magic itself was wonderfully described, easy to picture。 Sometimes, magical descriptions are too fantastical to imagine properly but this was not the case here。 The clothing was so colorful and elaborate, with small details that came in handy to know later。 It was just such a vivid picture and I really appreciated how easy this book was to fall into and enjoy。 I had to sometimes suspend my disbelief in terms of Shiori’s curse。 She was cursed to not be able to speak, lest a single sound kill one of her brothers, and she was cursed to have a wooden bowl stuck over her head。 The nature of the curse made it so she could see through the bowl, but no one else could。 However, the wording of some of the interactions later made it seem as though other characters could see her eyes or expression, which would have been impossible。 Also, it wasn’t just speech that would cause the curse to activate; it was any sound coming from her throat。 I wasn’t entirely sure of the parameters of this curse。 Did a gasp count? A scream would count, a whimper。 But a gasp? And how did Shiori prevent herself from making sounds in her sleep? I can’t believe she didn’t make a single sound during that whole time, no matter how determined she was not to。 I appreciate the effort Lim went to in order to emphasize how hard Shiori tried not to make sounds, biting her tongue, her lips, her cheek; causing herself physical pain so as to not make so much as a whimper。 But I couldn’t believe she didn’t make a single sound at all during the several months it took for the curse to run its course。 I would have loved more dragons! Shiori meets Seryu, a dragon prince。 He begins to train her in the ways of magic, especially dragon magic。 After she nearly drowns in the lake, he puts a sliver of a dragon pearl in her heart to save her。 The magic of the dragons is more prevalent than the dragon that we’re made to like from the start and I really hope there’s more of him in the sequel! Though, given how things might pan out, there could be a love triangle, between Shiori, Seryu, and Takkan, a thing I do not want。 I look forward to the sequel, where I’m sure to see more fantasy and fairytale elements, as well as a likely epic conclusion of love and magic。 I would recommend this book to fans of Elizabeth Lim。 Honestly, I haven’t read many books like this and I’m looking forward to reading more! 。。。more

This book was absolutely fabulous。 I'm in a reading slump right now and having trouble finding books I can focus on。 I devoured this。 Fantasy, re-told fairy tales, flipped tropes, strong female characters, it was all there。 Works ok as a stand alone, but I can't wait for the next。 This book was absolutely fabulous。 I'm in a reading slump right now and having trouble finding books I can focus on。 I devoured this。 Fantasy, re-told fairy tales, flipped tropes, strong female characters, it was all there。 Works ok as a stand alone, but I can't wait for the next。 。。。more
